Abstract:

In course of periodontal disease teeth movement and loss may occur, as a result of chronic inflammation. The necessary orthodontic and prosthetic therapy are often connected with the application of specific metals, which are used for stabilization purposes. The raising scientific awareness of the metal exposure toxic effects and its complex form lead to a search for innovative metal determination methods in alternative biological materials, e.g. saliva.

The aim of the investigation was to study the usefulness of available methodology to determination of selected metals in saliva of patients with periodontitis and healthy controls by two techniques ICP-MS and ICP-OES.

Among patients with periodontal disease increased levels of most elements in the saliva were observed and the differences in the average concentration of Cr/Cu/Mg/Mn are statistically significant. Based on the concentration of Ca/Mg/Cu/Zn/Fe/Mn/Co/Cr/Cd/Pb and chemometric analysis it is possible to distinguish patient samples from healthy individuals.
